Austin Art Mercado
This Saturday, June 21st:
From the press release:
“We are pleased to announce the first Austin Art Mercado, an open market where artists and collectors can connect directly while enjoying live music, refreshments, and dancing in a historic landmark house, with space devoted to ephemeral art installations.
The first Mercado features musical performances by local groups NBD, {{{Sunset}}}, and VC Childkraft. Artists exhibiting their work include Ivan Lozano, Sean Ripple, Justin Cox, Bryan Keplesky, Matthew Rodriguez, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, and many others; the list continues to grow. Artists wishing to show or sell their work should write to info@mercadoaustin.com.
The mission of the Mercado is to encourage more people to collect art, to make art more affordable, to help artists make a living, and to give artists a venue for showcasing ephemeral works. By allowing artists and enthusiasts to connect directly in a fun market environment, we hope to create a welcoming, egalitarian atmosphere for viewing and buying art, in contrast to the top-down, often intimidating experience offered by galleries and museums. We see a large group of artists with work to sell, and a large group of people who want to buy art but can’t afford to buy what they see in galleries and museums; we aim to provide an institution to serve these groups.”
See you there!

Tuesday ‘Tudez: In Remembrance of Nasty Nets
There are some Tuesdays when it’s 100 degrees outside for the forseeable future and the week stretches ahead of you like an oil-stained rubber band. When the hours are long and you haven’t even made it to the Wednesday hump yet, sometimes it’s best to curl up with some comforting snacks of detritus scavenged from the deepest MS Paint-filled abysses of The Intornetz: Version 1.0.
So let us bless the Nasty Nets Internet Surfing Club for their archive of scraggly yin-yang gifs, Nirvana avatars and CursorMania advertisements. Relax your minds, d00ds.

In related ‘tudez, go read this interview with Rhizome curator and Nasty Nets contributor Marisa Olson, courtesy of We Make Money Not Art.
Kevin Bewersdorf and Nasty Nets’ Paul Slocum collaborated here in Austin last year in an Okay Mountain exhibition. How I wish I’d gone so I could have seen this:

Deep House for Symphonic Band and Choir, 2006
dance club/rave music composed for high school or college band and choir, installed as sheet music, music loop, and grow lights.
Sheet music!
